Frequently Asked Questions - Pre-Admission

How can I apply for an undergraduate course in Delhi University (DU)?
Most of the undergraduate programs at University of Delhi are offered by the individual colleges. For those courses where the selection is based on the marks secured in the qualifying (10+2) examination, you can apply with a Common Pre-Admission Form. These forms are available at seventeen Admission Information Centers. The forms can also be submitted at any of the admission centers. Courses for which the selection is based on an Entrance examination, you will need to contact the respective colleges for the application procedure and the entrance examination dates.

How do I use the Common Pre-admission form?
One Common Pre-admission form can be used to apply for all courses and colleges available in constituents colleges of Delhi University except in St. Stephens, Jesus and Mary College and those colleges where you are applying for Sports Quota / ECA or Entrance Test is being conducted for particular course.

Can I fill two Common Pre-admission forms?
No, one common Pre-Admission form is sufficient as it can take your all college-course choices.

I don't belong to Delhi. Can I send the Common Pre-admission form by post?
No, common Pre-Admission forms received by post are not accepted.

Is the Common Pre-admission form available online?
The Common Pre-admission form is not available online. A sample copy has been provided on this web site for practice.

How do I know about by chances of getting admission in a particular course?
There are no absolute guidelines for this. However, you should look at last year's cut-off marks for the course you want to apply for in different colleges. While nothing can be said regarding this year's cut-off percentages, it is usually expected that there is not much change from last year. However, the exact cut-off percentages depend on the general trend of marks in the CBSE and other qualifying examinations.

I have obtained compartment in one subject in 10+2 exam held in 2008. Can I take admission in DU.
Yes, you can take provisional admission (provided your marks percentage is in cut-off list of any college), subject to passing the compartment examination within stipulated time.If you have been placed in compartment in more than one subject then you are not eligible for admission.

I have a gap year. How does it affect my chances?
The rules of the University of Delhi do NOT stipulate refusal to a candidate because of a gap year. Gap year students are considered at par with other current year students with regard to their cut-off percentages unless any particular college has stated any particular rule in their prospectus.

I belong to Scheduled caste. How do I apply?
Admissions to reserved categories and other quota based including Physically challenged candidates are done through the University directly. The reserved category Common Pre-admission form has the facility of recording the various preferences. You need not contact individual colleges. Please contact the designated Admission Information Centers / Dean Students Welfare, North Campus along with the relevant documents.

I had Business Mathematics in 10+2. Is it considered at par with Mathematics?
Business Mathematics is recognized to be equivalent to Mathematics for B.A. (Hons) Economics and B.Com. (Hons) courses only and not for B.A(Hons) /B.Sc(Hons) Mathematics.

Can Vocational subjects be taken into account while computing best of four?
Yes,(but certainly with some riders in some colleges). Please refer to the information bulletin for a list of vocational courses applicable for B.A. and B.A. (Vocational Studies) streams and individual college prospectus.

Can more than one Language be included in best of four?
For computing the Best four Subject (1 Language and 3 electives) combinations, the language can be any of the core languages including Sanskrit. If, besides the core language, a candidate as an elective has taken another language, it can be counted as one of the three best subjects.

I had Bio-technology subject in 10+2. Can it be included in the best three in place of Mathematics?
Bio-technology is NOT a substitute for Mathematics for B.Sc. Physical Sciences, Applied Physical Sciences, Honours courses in Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, and Instrumentation. For Life Science courses Bio-technology is considered as an alternate to Biology. Bio-technology can also be included among the best three electives for Arts and Commerce courses.

I am a Nepalese citizen and I have completed my 10+2 exams from Mussorrie, India. How do I apply to Delhi University for undergraduate courses under the foreign quota?
You cannot apply as a foreigner. But as a Nepalese student you are eligible for certain relaxations. Kindly contact room no. 220, New Administrative building, North Campus, University of Delhi for further details.

I am an Indian citizen but have appeared for GCE A level. Do I satisfy, requirements for admission to DU?
Please get the equivalence certificate verified by University of Delhi (room no. 220, New Administrative building, North Campus, University of Delhi) before applying through Common pre-admission form.

Is there any special cut-off for students from outside Delhi?
There are no special cut-offs for any candidate applying in the general category. If you have passed your school from a recognized Board, you will be treated on a par with any other candidate from the city

What is the difference between BA (pass) and BA (honours)?
BA (pass) has been restructured and is now referred to as the BA programme. It is a combination of subjects, while BA (honours) is more specialized and in-depth

Does the best of 4 marks vary for different colleges?
For meeting the cut-off, marks in English & three elective subjects are considered in all colleges. All colleges accept the elective subjects. However, some colleges also accept one vocational subject in the best of four

Can my application form be rejected in any circumstance?
It can get rejected if the magnetic strips on the form are tampered with

Is it possible for a science student to pursue economics (honours)?
Yes. But most colleges have a higher cut-off for noncommerce students

Can an SC/ST candidate use his parents’ certificate for the admission process?
No. The certificate has to be in the candidate’s name

Is there any course in forensic science in DU?
DU does not offer forensic science at the undergraduate level. But some colleges may have an add-on course in forensics
