Delhi University (DU) has for the first time appointed a deputy dean of students' welfare to help students who come from the seven northeastern states during the admission process. N Santacruz, who is from Manipur and teaches physics in Hindu College, has been entrusted with the task of counselling and sorting out the problems of the students.

Till now, students used to get help from volunteers of different students' organizations who belonged to the NE states but there was no nodal authority which they could contact for assistance. Said Santacruz, ‘‘Now, if any of the students face any problem they can directly come to me.”
He added: ‘‘We will have many student volunteers from NE states. They will be out in the field during the admission process. We have already written to the resident commissioners of different NE states so that they can pass on relevant information to their education secretaries.”
