Day 1
On CATE
How many colleges are participating in Common Aptitude Test in English?
17 colleges will admit students in English (hons) through CATE. Among them six — Lady Shri Ram College, Miranda House, Bharti College, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College and Deshbandhu College — have joined the test this year. CATE
will have comprehensive questions and questions with multiple choices. Unlike previous years when the forms were only available at Arts Faculty, this time the forms will be sold in all colleges that are part of the test
What is eligibility criteria?
Any student with minimum 60% aggregate with at least 60% marks in English will be eligible
On filling up of forms
Do we need to submit the common admission form in person?
Admission form does not require any signature or a photograph of the candidate. Anyone can submit it between May 28 and June 11
Do we need to attach a copy of the marksheet with the admission form?
Documents are not required with the form. Original certificates and marksheets will be required at the time of admission
Is there any age bar for admission? Are compartmental candidates eligible for admission?
There is no age bar for admission to DU. Candidates with compartment in one subject can apply. If successful, these candidates will be given provisional admission and will be required to clear their compartmental exam
Do we need to apply for hostel at the time of submission of admission forms?
A separate form of the college has to be submitted for a hostel seat. Admission to a college does not ensure a seat in the hostel
Is there any deduction of marks if the student comes from a different state or a board other than CBSE?
DU does not deduct marks of students coming from outside Delhi
Are there any scholarships available for students?
The department of science and technology offers scholarship of about Rs 5,000 per month to the candidates who were among the top one percent in class X or XII board results and to those whose names appeared in the IIT-JEE extended list The scholarship is available only to those who are applying for BSc (hons) in physics, chemistry, zoology & botany
On Semester
Will DU implement semester system in science & commerce from this year?
DU administration has already decided to introduce semester system in science courses. For now, there is no word on commerce courses
What will be the course structure under semester system?
For science students, there will be six semesters in 3 years, covering 24 main papers, 6 allied papers and 2 inter-disciplinary subjects
Day 2
Where is the common pre-admission form available?
It can be purchased from any of the 16 designated centres in north, east, west and south zones — details of which are available on DU website. It costs Rs 50, along with prospectus. A sample form is available on the website
How does one avail of the sports or ECA quota?
Sports/ECA quota works slightly differently across colleges. While the candidate should have won awards and certificates in the past, colleges give importance to different games and activities as per their requirement. This time, sports trials will be conducted by the university while ECA trials will be held at individual colleges like before
Is it necessary to have studied maths in class XII for BCom (hons) and economics (hons)?
In almost all colleges maths is essential for admission to BCom (hons). Others, which don’t, deduct a few marks from the aggregate. For economics (hons), maths in class XII is compulsory
Can physical education be included in the best four subjects?
Some colleges allow physical education in the best four subjects but only after a deduction in aggregate
Will a School of Open Learning degree have the same value as that from a regular DU college?
The degree is provided by the university. So it is same for students from SOL and from a regular college. It does not carry the name of the institution
Is there a way to judge which college is better?
For academics, find out the previous years’ results of colleges. For extra-curricular, see the kind of societies it has and how active they are.
Some More
Can the common admission form also be used for application to the BA (English) programme?
The 17 colleges, which use the CATE score, will take admission only through the entrance test and the common admission form can’t be used for the purpose. For other colleges, you can use the common admission form.
What kind of questions are asked in CATE?
You are expected to have knowledge of literature. You can be asked about the latest book by Salman Rushdie, Booker Prize winners etc. You can be asked to write an essay on the last book you read.
Where can I get the CATE form?
Unlike last year when the form was available only at the Arts faculty, this year the CATE form will be available at all the 17 colleges that accept the CATE score. Before you go there, don’t forget to get a demand draft worth Rs 300 made by the State Bank of India in favour of the Registrar, University of Delhi.
I am a commerce student (or a science student). I wish to apply for BA (English). What percentage will be deducted for the purpose of computing best of four?
There is no uniform rule for that. It varies from one college to other. But we would suggest that you take admission in one of the colleges that accept the CATE score. This would nullify your decrease in percentage. (For CATE, your score should be at least 60 per cent in the best of four and at least 60 per cent in English).
Would the cut-off list be put on the website?
The first cut off list will be out on June 22 and yes, it will be put up on DU’s website.
If I don’t make the cut in the college of my choice in the first list, what should I do? Shall I wait for the second list in the same college, or is it advisable to secure a seat in some other college?
One must try to secure a seat immediately after the first list is declared. For that you must pay the fees and deposit your documents in the college X (where you have taken admission after the first list). After the admission, your documents will be returned, which you can use for the purpose of admission in other colleges after the second or third list.
In case you withdraw the admission, your fee is also returned after a small amount from it has been deducted.
Is it better to do BSc (physics/ chemistry/ botany/zoology) from DU rather than a BE/BTech?
If you have got admission in a third tier engineering college, then BSc scores over an engineering degree. That’s because this will help you save one year and in some cases also prepare you for the industry. Many of our students who graduate in chemistry or industrial chemistry or computer science get placements in big corporate houses.
Do students get jobs through campus placements?
Yes, Delhi University has a Central Placement Cell (CPC) through which 732 students from 53 college got jobs in different companies this year.
The science department has other programmes such as life sciences and physical sciences. Are they better than the conventional physics/ chemistry/ zoology programmes?
One should give preference to an honours course if one plans to pursue a PG course in the future. One can get direct admission to an MSc course if one has secured 60 per cent marks in an honours programme. But non-honours students must clear an entrance test, even if they have a score of 75 per cent marks in BSc.
