If you thought reality shows were the only platform to showcase your talent, then think again. For, if you are a fresher in the Delhi University then it’s showtime people. The ragging sessions will give you enough opportunities to sing, dance, act and more. And is all this making you nervous? Well, don’t be scared for we’ll help you rehearse. Here’s a list of the most practiced ragging trends and also ways to tackle them. Simply read on and then go ahead fully prepared. Also, you never know, the audience might actually cheer for you!
1 Introduce yourself plz!
Forget a ‘Hello’ or a ‘Hi’, think ‘Vanakkam’ or ‘Bonjour’! Yes, for your seniors are going to ask you for an introduction in a language that you aren’t really familiar with. The boring ones will however settle for an intro in shudh Hindi too.
• TIP:Be prepared with a short paragraph in a regional or a foreign language. This should talk about your school, course and hobbies.
2 Grab the mike
It’s time to nurture your dream of becoming a singer. Yes, all you bathroom singers come out of the closet! ‘Sing a song’ may be the most boring and regular form of ragging but then why not make the most of the platform and enjoy your few minutes of fame?
• TIP: It’s a good beginning to make it to a reality show.
3 College gyaan
Now that you have arrived, you better do some HW on your college. “I was asked to say the full name of the college,” says Neha, a student from Venky. So, she actually walked to the notice board and memorised the name! “It is – Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams’ Sri Venkateswara College,” she shares. Aakash Bhattacharya from St Stephen’s adds, “I was given the handbook and asked to memorise certain sections.”
• TIP: Keep the college prospectus handy and refer to it when in need.
4 At your service
As the seniors laze around they give you a chance to hone your hospitality skills. “I was asked to fetch paranthas for my seniors at midnight. And though I did so, I took more than a bite on the way,” says Padmnabh Tripathi from Hindu College. And what did the seniors say? “Nothing, in fact they laughed out loud.” Besides this you might be required to serve coffee and tea to them too.
• TIP: Look at the experience as a quick guide to know what’s served where.
5 Nach le!
Once you are done with crooning, you’ll be asked to do a little gig. They’ll probably start with the Chawanni–Atthanni dance. Here’s how it works, pay attention to the words for they’ll be uttered at a speed – Chawanni: left thumka, Atthanni: right thumka, Ek rupiya: look in the front, Do rupiya: look back, Paanch rupiya: turn around. Next, don’t be shy to hop on the table in the canteen and show your jhatkas and matkas. And yes, pole dance, that’s a relatively new trend. Keep it wild but decent, though.
• TIP: Stand in front of the mirror and practice the Chawanni–s Atthanni dance it will let your burn calories too!
6 Pop the question!
Now what could be better than a chance to propose to the cute chick or the hot guy in the name of ragging? This traditional style will help you speak your heart out, so make the most of it!
• TIP: Keep your eyes open and go ahead and flirt!
7 Some quirky fun
If you are lucky then you will come across a bunch of innovative seniors who think beyond the box. And, that’s when the real fun will begin! You could be asked to roam around the corridors trying to catch a wild cat or a hen let loose! Or perhaps talk like a vegetable vendor all day long. “I was asked to walk around the campus shouting – Mujhe meri biwi se bachao,” says Amit, a student from Khalsa College.
You could even be asked to compete with a fellow fresher in a dance-dramatic show. Say, while a girl dances on Beedi Jalai Le you play a politician giving a speech on the performance. And they might also give you a chance to feel like a celeb. “I was asked to tell everyone I meet that I was a cousin of an international footballer and they could take my autograph,” says Nitin a student from Moti Lal Nehru College.
• TIP: Keep a close watch on what’s on telly and take your clue from the saas-bahu sagas and reality shows.
