NORTH

The students in the 10 colleges of North Campus are gifted as far as hangout zones are concerned. From Kamla Nagar market to Majnu ka Tila (MKT) to the canteens of neighbouring colleges, there is no dearth of places near the campus where you can just sit, eat and shop with friends. ‘‘Kamla Nagar is the nearest market with a lot of eateries — air-conditioned as well as streetside. We go there whenever we have nothing better to do. There are so many vendors there who sell clothes with latest designs at really cheap prices,’’ said Ishneet Chawla, a student of SGTB Khalsa College. If you have ample time, do line up at Khan Chacha’s for the sumptuous chhole bhathure. Even the faculty swears by its taste.

Girls on the campus also slip away to MKT for hair cuts and authentic Chinese food. MKT is near Kashmere Gate and Metro is an easy option to reach there. Not too far are the canteens of St Stephen’s and the Delhi School of Economics. They are frequented by most of the seniors and freshers can make a beeline too.

If you are planning to explore the Ridge Area at the back of the campus, make sure you go there in a group to avoid attracting the policeman. For movies, however, students have to go to Connaught Place. It’s just 20 minutes away if you take the Metro.

SOUTH

The colleges in the south are far from each other and there are many exclusive hangout zones in south Delhi. For students in colleges near Dhaula Kuan like Sri Venkateswara, Jesus & Mary College, Maitreyi, ARSD, Chanakya cinema was a quick getaway. But since it no longer exists, momo joints next to the Yashwant Place Shopping Complex are a good option. For students in LSR, Gargi and Kamala Nehru, markets in GK-I, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and the malls in Saket and Ansal Plaza are the usual places to hang out. Said Shreya Rekhi, a third-year student of Kamala Nehru: ‘‘If you really want to shop with your own pocket money, the M-Block market in GKI will be an ideal place. We go there for fancy footwear, junk jewellery and clothes. But it’s important to know bargain well there.’’ Saket malls are also favourite among youngsters for their food courts and a variety of restaurants.

WEST

For the students of colleges like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya in Karampura, Rajdhani at Raja Garden, Bharati in Janakpuri and Bhaskaracharya in Dwarka, the malls in Rajouri Garden and the District Centre in Janakpuri are just a Metro ride away. But students in Kalindi in Patel Nagar and Janaki Devi Mahavidyalaya in Karol Bagh often head to Janpath for it takes just 15-20 minutes on the Metro. And of course, the Ajmal Khan Market is just a hop away from these colleges. There may not be many hangout options for students in west Delhi but these few places offer almost everything from film theatres and book shops to food courts and kurta stalls.

EAST

Students of Maharaja Agrasen College in Mayur Vihar and other colleges in east Delhi often hang out in the Atta Market in Noida’s sector-18. The Samachar Market in Mayur Vihar is another favourite with students for its kathi rolls and flavoured milk shakes. The market is often brimming with students in the evening. Also the malls in east Delhi and those in Noida are accessible through bus and the Metro is also going to be operational there soon.
