Delhi University Students' Union elections for four posts passed off peacefully today with only 37 per cent of the students exercising their franchise.
Major student organisations, BJP-affiliated ABVP and Congress-backed NSUI, are contesting one post each after the candidature of their nominees for the remaining seats was cancelled by DU authorities for violating code of conduct.
The Supreme Court had yesterday dismissed the special leave petition of NSUI candidates, challenging the rejection of their nomination for the DUSU polls.
Cancellation of nominations of seven candidates, including three each from the major groups, have also given smaller groups a chance to increase their cadre base in the varsity.
Following the rejection of candidacy from the main student organisations, underdogs like INSO, SFI and AISA are emerging frontrunners for the presidential post. |
