Freshers are geared up for their first day in Delhi University and so are the colleges. As most colleges reopen for the new session on July 16, the day will start with the orientation programme to introduce students to the faculty and the ethos of the institution. The colleges also claim to be ready with all necessary arrangements to prevent any incident of ragging.
The orientation programme in most colleges will begin by 10am. The best part is that freshers can also take their parents along. Ira Pandit, spokesperson, Daulat Ram College, said, ‘‘Freshers are made to meet the respective department heads on the orientation day. Some students admitted under the ECA quota also showcase their talent on the first day. We have three students performing this time.’’ A few colleges may also give students their identity cards and the time-table for the week.
Colleges like Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hans Raj, SGTB Khalsa, Lady Shri Ram, however, may begin with classes on Thursday as they held the orientation on Wednesday. While Hans Raj began on a spiritual note with a havan for the newcomers, SRCC had arranged a special lunch for them. ‘‘We will begin regular classes according to the timetable on Thursday. The teachers and students usually spend time interacting with each other in the initial classes,’’ said P C Jain, principal, SRCC.
However, as most other colleges are reopening on Thursday, a host of arrangements are in place to prevent ragging. Even as Delhi Police will step up the deployment on the campus and keep a watch through 24 CCTVs, individual colleges have also made vigilance squads comprising senior teachers to conduct surprise checks. Jain said the chances of ragging on the first day were minimal as seniors were not invited to the orientation programme. ‘‘Most of them haven’t even got their previous year’s results,’’ said Jain.
M C Nahar, vice-principal, Kirori Mal College, also said that committees had been formed to check ragging on Day 1 in college as well as the hostel. ‘‘We don’t expect any ragging as we have taken necessary steps. The police presence will help us,’’ Nahar said.
The north district police will set up special police pickets in the area on Thursday. These pickets will be located on University Road, Chatra Marg and GTB Road on North Campus. Lady police staff, hailing from Northeast states, will also be posted to help the students from the area.
