Percentile system or the marks equalization system is about measuring your potential vis-à-vis the best in the market. It attempts to bring different boards under the same cover so that they stand at par and every student has a fair standing in seeking admissions to the most sought after university in the country. An attempt was made last year to introduce the Percentile System in Mumbai University which was not met with much success.
Lets imagine a Percentile system in Delhi University .To put it roughly it would put a state board student with 84.3% on a par with an ICSE student scoring 87.3% and a CBSE student with 86.4% as all three would have a percentile of 90%. So all the hard work, blood, sweat each of these students put in atleast put them on an equal footing. From there its your own hardwork that pays off.
Let’s see the downside of the current selection process. ICSE as is known has a tougher English syllabus than CBSE. So this weighs heavily in the favor of CBSE students. Language as in known is not just low scoring but highly subjective. Subjective to not just you own perception and skill and linguistic abilities but subjective to the moods and competencies of the examiner as well. So yes this comparative advantage, a gap of a mere 5-10 marks is wide enough to bury your dreams of making it to your dream college.
The state board students are shocked to see their counterparts from other boards get as high as 100 marks in language subjects where a 70+ marks for them is an achievement in itself.
“I don’t know the rationale behind having a tough marking system when its a major decision factor in making it to the college of my choice. Its just hindering my progress”, a disheartened state Board student was quoted as saying after getting a 84% overall percentage and still being a state rank holder. This put against a CBSE topper who scored a 98.4% is a shocking
difference.
Another case-point would be that of the State Board of Andhra Pradesh. Now this board is widely known to have a very liberal marking system which gives the students under that board an upper hand in the selection to various universities across the country. It was once established that 2 in 5 students in BITS, Pilani was a telegu. Now that figure speaks a lot. Infact it shouts the advantage that the students of Andhra Board have in displacing a 2x5000 students in one of the most coveted colleges in the country. It doesn’t come as a surprise that BITS scrapped the 90%+criteria and changed it to 80% in PCM and an entrance test.
Its time we evolve our education system and make it more progressive. Rather make it all-inclusive!
